Chapter Twenty Two
Tayla
I stood at the counter, washing my hands slowly as I felt Adreaxâs eyes all over my body. He was sitting up on the table behind me, finally able to move about for short durations before needing a rest. His wound was healing nicely, and he hadnât had any more fainting spells in the days since weâd escaped.
At first, weâd thought we could start up the shuttle and make a run for it, but with Adreax in such terrible shape and no weapons aboard the ship to defend ourselves, running would only get us killed. Plus, my little stunt with the brakes had left our ship with little runway to get off the ground again. Instead, we set to work on the radios, calling back to my Earth lab and requesting help, but even they werenât sure what to do. The lab couldnât get confirmation from the government about whether they knew of the Patrol, and everyone was being suspiciously tightlipped about staging a rescue. I couldnât help but believe that part of the reason was that we had two aliens aboard our ship currently, and it might have seemed like a trap.
That left the four of us here, watching through the windows as the Patrol guards ransacked our camp, set things on fire, and threatened us through the barricaded door. So far, they hadnât blasted their way in, but I didnât consider it out of the question if they got impatient.
âCome, relax,â Adreax said, sneaking up behind me and slipping his hands under my arms so he could rest them on my belly, pressing himself against my back.
He knew my mind was running wild with worries over what would happen next, but heâd found a clever way of keeping me distracted since that first kiss. I felt him brush my hair aside, and then his lips were on my neck, planting soft kisses up and down my skin, sending chills down my back. He leaned forward, pressing my hips against the counter so I couldnât move, and I felt his fingers slide beneath the waistband of my pants. He never went any further than that, but the teasing feel of his rough hands touching the tender area above my hipbones almost made me beg him to keep going. Almost.
âDonât,â I whined. âYouâll get us caught.â
The thing was, Herod and Alec still didnât know about our little romance, and neither of them would approve. I knew it would hurt Alec to see me with another man, especially the one whoâd destroyed so much of our work. However, it was Herod that really posed a problem. Even after carrying Adreax all the way back to the shuttle and refusing to leave his side, Herod still didnât like me, and it was very obvious. It worried Adreax that Herod might go on a killing spree if he caught us together, so we had to be very careful.
âIâll strangle him with my bare hands before I let him stand in the way of my having you,â Adreax muttered into my ear, and I thought he was only half-joking.
